Chennai-based Srikals Graphics was established in 1990 by Mr.
Kalyanasundaram. Formerly, an economist by studies and an
advertising manager by profession, Kalyanasundaram had a strong
interest in printing which he eventually pursued into the making of
Having worked in leading advertising agencies like
Rediffusion, Kalyan got an opportunity to foster his creativity. In
1998, he established his own creative unit. While he designed the
jobs for the clients, the printing was out-sourced. Shortly
thereafter, Kalyan decided to set up a printing unit in-house as
well. With Rs 10.000 in hand and three employees to back-up, Kalyan
installed a letterpress in Royapettah.
And then there was no looking back. They installed their
first single-colour offset press during the same time and kept
adding sheetfed offset presses of more capacities year after year.
Srikals primarily catered to commercial print jobs and most of
their jobs came from advertising agencies.
Gradually, packaging jobs started pouring in and Srikals
identified a good opportunity in the packaging segment as well. In
2005, they installed a four-colour press specifically to address
this segment. A significant portion of their packaging jobs came in
from pharmaceutical companies.
In order to further strengthen their infrastructure for
catering packaging jobs, they installed a Heidelberg Speedmaster CD
102 five-colour press with coater in 2007. Says Kalyan,"Since
we were also concentrating on packaging jobs and the demands posed
by clients were challenging, we opted for the Heidelberg
Speedmaster CD 102 which provided us superior quality and
cutting-edge technology. We are confident of handling a job of any
complexity now. Many a times, jobs done by other printers which are
rejected by clients come to us and we deliver the required
He adds, "Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 - with the
inline coater operates with a delivery of 15.000 sheets per hour
with fully automatic digital controlled system - CP 2000. The
makeready times are very short and press operations are
user-friendly. Also, size is an added advantage especially with the
pharmaceutical jobs. We have completed 18 million impressions in
less than one year on a 12-hour working day, on this new press.
Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 is an excellent value for
money." says Mr. Kalyan. Srikals now exports print jobs to the
U.S, European and African markets as well. Besides printing they
make use of their in-house design unit very efficiently.
"My agency experience helps me a lot in understanding
the brief from the customer. We understand their language of
typography, colour and layout and provide them suggestions on the
selection of the right kind of paper and printing which proves
cost-effective for them.", says Kalyan, who supervises every
single creative that goes out from the Design Studio.
He adds, "A customer can walk into our design studio
with a scribble and we will take care of the rest. We are equipped
with latest designing softwares, and have an individual client
servicing division which operates just like an ad agency
Today, Srikals operates from Ekkattuthangal in Chennai with
their own building spanning 60.000 square feet and is one of the
prominent names in South India whose client portfolio includes
major brands like Biocon, Citibank and Henkel, etc. Srikals even
takes care of inventory and logistics for their customers'
print job distribution.
With an employee strength of 200 people, the company has been
growing at a steady rate of 15-20 percent annually. After the
installation of the new Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102, their annual
growth rate has touched 25 percent. Srikals also has a full-fledged
postpress department in place which contributes to enhanced
Commenting on Heidelberg, Kalyan expresses, "Heidelberg
is not an equipment supplier but an advisor to us. They have guided
and helped us grow like partners in business. We have known no
other supplier who takes efforts to train our people. Our operators
have visited the Print Media Academy in India and have upgraded
their skills which has helped us to a great extent. Heidelberg
takes training and service aspect very seriously with its customers
and this is exactly what printers need. Heidelberg is worth the
investment - whichever way you look at it".
A well-planned marketing department is taken care of by
Srinivasan, elder son of Kalyan, who has completed his Engineering
degree in Computer Sciences and holds an MBA from London.
Srinivasan has also done courses from Heidelberg's Print Media
Academy in Dubai.
Balaji, the younger son of Kalyan, takes care of the
production department and works very closely with Srinivasan.
"Implementation of an ERP system is in process to serve
clients better and we are also in the process of procuring ISO
certification. We will keep upgrading our infrastructure to deliver
the best to our clients. Our customers' satisfaction will lie
at the heart of everything that we will do" concludes
